2003 - Eugene (Men) and the Mudhens (Women) Take the Tournament

Eugene hosted its annual Eugene Celebration Rugby 10’s Tournament on Saturday, September 20, 2003, at the UO’s South Bank field.  Eugene’s A-side took the men’s tournament trophy with a 15-14 come-from-behind win over ORSU’s (Portland) A-side.  The Emerald City Mudhens (Seattle) took home their second consecutive championship for the women.

The format of the tournament and the skill of the participants allowed for several exciting matches with close scores. Last year’s champion Bend won a tough first-round match in overtime over Eastside with only five points (1 try in overtime) scored all game.  Bend then faced its rival and tournament hosts Eugene.  Eugene squeaked by with the 30-28 victory.

The men’s championship match saw ORSU come out hard and fast, putting the first try and conversion on the board.  Eugene came back after the kick off with Bill Terrill intercepting a pass in the backline.  He ran it in untouched for the try.  This seemed to epitomize the rest of the match.  ORSU rambled hard in the loose and dominated the scrums.  However, Eugene seemed to capitalize on every ORSU mistake and turn it into a fast-running try.

At the awards ceremony, the hosts gave the traditional cup along with individual medals to the victors.  The ceremony was sponsored by the Wild Duck Brewery and Alaskan Brewery with Wild Duck’s Glens Best Bitter and Alaskan Pale Ale.

Eugene Celebration 10’s Tournament Rules/Guidelines (last updated 9-18-03)

  1. No alcohol or nudity at the pitch.

  2. Brackets will be filled with a blind draw by pulling teams out of a hat.

  3. Efforts will be made to keep a club with 2 teams on opposite sides of the bracket or in different groupings.

  4. Teams should arrive at the appointed pitch and ready to play at the scheduled kickoff time.  Continually check the tournament schedule as times may change as the tournament progresses.  If a prior match is running late or into overtime then the referee shall conduct the coin toss prior to the teams entering the field of play.

  5. Each team playing shall make their best efforts to provide a touch judge.

  6. There may be 5 substitutions per match not including “blood bins.”

  7. The goal posts are on the dead ball line at the back of the try zone.

  8. Scrum must have 5 players.  The second row must bind onto a prop either as “locks” or as “flankers.”

  9. Lineouts must consist of at least 2 players.

  10. Kickoffs, conversion kicks and penalty kicks at goal shall be drop kicks.

  11. The team that scores shall receive the restart kick, like 15’s not 7’s.

  12. A player shown a yellow card shall be sent to the sin bin for 3 minutes.  Two yellow cards accumulated during the tournament by one player shall result in the offending player being barred from participating for the duration of the tournament.  If a player receives a second yellow card in a different match than the first yellow card was issued, then the offending player will be ejected but a substitute player will serve the sin bin time and then continue play in place of the ejected player.  A player receiving a red card shall be ejected from that match and the duration of the tournament.

  13. No matches will end in a tie…  (before each overtime there shall be a coin flip to determine who kicks off or who kicks first)…   The first overtime will consist of a 5- minute sudden death period (first team to score wins – in a finals match the sudden death period shall be 10 minutes).  If still tied then the second overtime will consist of the best of three drop goals from behind the 22 meter line (each team will nominate 3 players to each take 1 kick from anywhere behind the 22 meter line, the teams will take turns kicking and the team that makes the most of their 3 kicks shall be declared the winner).  If still tied then the third overtime will consist of sudden death drop kicks from behind the 22 meter line (first team to make their kick while the other team misses shall be declared the winner--each team will determine the order that their players will kick  and the 3 players who kicked in the second overtime may be reselected to kick first), each team’s player shall take 1 kick from anywhere behind the 22 meter line until one team misses their kick while the other team makes their kick.  Each kick made in the second and third overtime shall count as 1 point on the final score.

  14. Tie Breakers for teams with identical records to determine which team will advance.
    a. Most tries scored
    b. Fewest tries allowed
    c. Coin Greatest point differential (points for minus points against)
    d. flip.
